They’re called oil extractor pumps, but they can be used with any vehicle fluid—transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant, and of course, oil. Oil extractor pumps are the surest way to purge the old fluid and any of its impurities and contaminants before performing repairs or changing fluids. When changing oil, an extractor pump eliminates the hassle and mess of raising the car, crawling underneath, opening the drain plug, and catching the oil in a tub (though on older vehicles, you may need to do that to change the oil filter).

With an oil extractor pump, a hose is inserted into the dipstick tube and connected to the extractor, which pulls the fluid out by creating a vacuum.  It’s the same principle as siphoning. Most oil extractor pumps operate by a hand pump, like on a bicycle tire pump, or a foot pedal, but there are also pumps that operate on electricity or compressed air. Considerations in choosing the right oil extractor pump include pumping efficiency (how long it takes to extract a certain amount of fluid), the tank capacity (it should be big enough to contain all the fluids you need to extract without having to be emptied mid-task) and, as always, price. Caution: Every extractor reviewed here uses polyethylene or a similar plastic, so unlike metal, these tanks could melt at high temperatures (above 176 F/80 C). Let your car cool down before an oil change if you’ve been driving it for more than 10 minutes.

The MityVac 7201 is an oil extractor pump with a long list of positives. At 8.8 liters, it’s one of the largest-capacity extractors on the consumer market. Made of polyethylene, it will not rust. It has a long-handled pump which reduces the number of up-and-down motions required to get the oil flowing. An automatic flow control valve prevents overfilling the tank. And it works in reverse. It can be used to fill as well as remove fluids from a vehicle. Customers complain of an inadequate owners’ manual, an insufficient variety of supplied hoses and poor customer service.

The EWK 6.5 Liter Pneumatic/Manual pump can be operated two ways—using an air compressor or manually. Connected to an air compressor, the EWK is fast, able to drain a four-cylinder engine of its oil in about two minutes. Manually, of course, it takes a bit longer, but the ability to choose based on the availability of a compressor or the desire for quiet operation is a big plus. It features a spout for draining the used oil from the collector tank. User frustrations include a lack of instructions (forcing them to go to YouTube), the lack of a cap for the tank’s opening (which could lead to spills if transporting to a recycling facility) and inadequate hose length.

While hand pumps are sometimes a strain, the Extoil 6L will at least tell you how hard you’ve pumped. It has a gauge that monitors the reservoir vacuum. As the vacuum depletes, you’ll know when to start pumping again for maximum flow. A foot pedal helps stabilize the tank during pumping. Other strong points include an integrated sealed tube holder which allows for clean, organized storage when not in use. Some users complain about leaking seals at the bottom of the reservoir, poorly-fitting tubes and a limited number of hose sizes.

At 5.3 liters, the OEMTOOLS 24389 is a solid choice if a smaller-capacity oil extractor pump fits your needs. One-piece construction eliminates leaks from seams. It features overflow protection (especially important with a smaller tank) and quick-fit connectors. A long tube means the unit can sit on the floor for most passenger cars, but probably not for trucks and SUVs. User-reported downsides include a poorly written owners’ manual and customer support issues.

The Performance Tool W54170 makes the list not only because of its budget price, but its sheer primal approach to the task. First, for $27, you do not get a reservoir tank. You’ll have to supply your own. What you do get is an electric pump connected to a suction tube and two alligator clamps which attach to a vehicle battery. It’s small enough to travel in the trunk of a car and can be used anywhere. However, most people are unlikely to travel with their own reservoirs, so there’s a bit of an honor system at play to make sure the fluids are contained safely and recycled properly after extraction. Owner complaints revolve around leaks, slow extraction times and a hose size that doesn’t fit enough vehicles.
